The BYU Center for Remote Sensing (CERS) is located on the ninth floor of the Spencer W. Kimball Tower (SWKT) on the Brigham Young University Campus in Provo, Utah. Provo is located in 4200 ft Utah Valley and just less than an hour south of Salt Lake City in the State of Utah.

Provo enjoys a small town atmosphere with 105,000 residents, a nice business community, and two large universities. The 11,750 foot Mount Timpanogas dominates the skyline north of the city and the 23 mile long Utah Lake is just to the west. Perhaps Provo's biggest claim to fame is that it is the home of Brigham Young University. There are numerous hotels in Provo which are convenient to the BYU campus.

The international airport in Salt Lake City is the closest major airport to Provo and BYU. It is a major hub for Delta and Southwest airlines. You can either rent a car at the airport or take the Rocky Mountain Super Express shuttle service to Provo. The shuttle service can drop you off at your hotel or at the BYU Wilkinson Center. Salt Lake Airport to BYU (driving)

To get to the Provo area from the Salt Lake City airport if you are driving: (Airport Access Map). From the airport head take I-80 eastbound to the I-215 interchange. Take I-215 southbound toward Provo (follow the signs). Take I-215 South 3 or 4 miles to the I-15 interchange. Turn right (southbound) onto I-15 toward Provo. Travel I-15 South for about 45 miles to Orem City (which is just north and west of Provo).

To get to the BYU campus from I-15 take the University Parkway exit (marked as the BYU exit - formally known as 1200 S. Orem) Follow University Parkway East to the BYU campus (about 2 miles). You will pass a large mall on your left and go down a hill into Provo. At the bottom of the hill go past two lights and turn right (southbound) onto University Ave. Make a left onto 1200 N. at the first light. If you miss the turn onto University, make a right at the next light onto onto Canyon Road then left at 1200 N.

To the Spencer W. Kimball Tower (Simple Map)

The main entrance to the BYU campus is Provo 1200 N. This road goes east up the hill. Either turn right at the top of the hill at the light and make an immediate left into one visitor's parking lot or go past the light at the top of the hill and under two white pedestrian bridges and make an immediate right into a second visitor's parking lot.

The SWKT is the tallest building on campus. To get to the SWKT walk southward and toward the taleest building. The Center's main office is on the 9th floor.

To get to the SWKT turned left. It is up a small hill. The student union building (known as the Wilkinson Center [ELWC] is on your right. The white Crabtree Technology Building [CTB] with it's green windows is on the left. At the top of the hill where a drive descends into an underground garage, turn left. The Clyde Building is the second building on the right. (Second building south of the Wilkinson Center).

Weather

The average winter temperatures in Provo and Salt Lake City average 40F but can be below 0F at night. Summer temperature can range up to the high nineties. Provo is in a large mountain valley at an altitude approximately 4500 feet.

Skiing

Some the world's best skiing is within an hour and half of Provo. Nearby ski resorts include Park City, Park West, Deer Valley, Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude, and Sundance (Sundance is only 25 minutes from Provo up Provo Canyon). Both downhill and cross-country skiing are available. Equipment rental is available and there are beginner through advanced slopes at all resorts.

Sight-Seeing

A good sight-seeing stop is Temple Square (home of the famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir) in Salt Lake City (1 hour north of Provo). Free tours are available in most languages. There are lots of other tourist activities to do in Utah, including a quite a number of National Parks and the like.
